Getting started with Access to CSV migration

Purpose of this tutorial is to show you basic use of Full Convert in migrating Access to CSV. To learn about advanced features such as built-in scheduler, data type customization, project customization rules, per-table column mapping, logging, options etc., take a look at the Full Convert project page and read all about it.

Let's do your first database conversion. Click on the New database conversion link, or click on the New button on the ribbon above.

Start new project

Project wizard will lead you through everything you need to set up your conversion

There are just 4 screens in our project wizard - and the last one is actually just a confirmation. We wanted to make it super-easy even for non-technical people.

1. Connect to your source Access database

Access database is either MDB or ACCDB file, depending on the version of Access you are using. First, pick Access in the list of source databases. After that, specify your Access database file. Either type in full path to the file yourself, or simply click ellipsis (...) button to browse in your file system. For standard Access databases, that's all you need to do. However, if your Access database is protected, you will need to specify your password as well. Also, if you use Access workgroups and security, find your system database and specify username and password for it.

2. Connect to your target CSV database

CSV format is widely used for data import and export. Basically, CSV is comma-delimited data in text file. Let's pick Text in the list of target databases. Type in full path to the folder where your CSV files are - or click ellipsis (...) button to browse for the folder in your file system.

3. Table selection

We will now select tables for conversion. All tables in the right list will be converted from Access to CSV - please note that you can count rows of tables to easily see where data actually resides. Clicking

Unselect empty moves all empty tables to Do not convert list.

4. Summary

You have now provided everything needed for conversion to begin.

Simply press the Convert! button to start it.

Alternatively, you can opt to browse your target database instead and postpone conversion. As Full Convert has full-fledged database/data explorer built-in, we will show you all the tables in the target database. You can even open any table and see its contents. You would typically do this immediately after the conversion, but it's handy if you want to set up project and save it without running the conversion right away.

This is beginner's tutorial, so we won't go into details of power-user's options of project customization.

Review your choices before commencing database migration

Conversion progress, while you lean back and enjoy

Full Convert is very fast. We use dedicated native database components instead of relying on translation libraries like ODBC which incur performance hit and often have bugs of their own. Reaching transfer of 20.000 records per second is not uncommon. Of course, that speed can't be reached with slow databases (like Access, for example), when large binary data is in table, or when network lag is an issue.

Detailed summary to Access to CSV migration

After Access to CSV conversion is finished, you will be presented with a summary. If errors occur, you will be able to inspect them in detail, see SQL commands used (if you enabled SQL logging option), as well as save all the logs. Where appropriate, we provide you with suggestions of how to further speed up transfer or avoid certain issues.

By the way, Full Convert handles databases of unlimited size and (as you can see) is incredibly easy to use.
