How to convert Access to Firebird

Full Convert is designed for ease of use and reliability to make sure you get your job done as quickly and as simply as possible.

Source database is known as Microsoft Access, MS Access (related files: mdb, accdb).

Making migration easy for you

Full Convert is a fully self-tuning software. Your migration will work as expected without you needing to adjust anything.

Data types are different in Firebird compared to the source Access. We automatically adjust them as we copy the tables so you don't have to worry about it. You can adjust the mapping rules if you wish to change the following defaults:

  • binary varchar
  • bit smallint
  • datetime timestamp
  • double double precision
  • longbinary blob sub_type 0
  • money decimal(18,2)
  • nchar char
  • ntext blob sub_type 1
  • nvarchar varchar
  • single float (if precision <= 24)
  • single double precision (if precision > 24)
  • smallmoney decimal(18,4)
  • text blob sub_type 1
  • tinyint smallint
  • uniqueidentifier char(38)

Full Convert migration in 4 easy steps

1.
Access connection

Connection to Access

We will choose Access database from the list of available source database formats and fill in connection properties. You can simply click ellipsis (...) button to select MDB or ACCDB database file. It depends on the version of your database. Access 2007 databases are contained in ACCDB files, while earlier versions are contained in MDB files.

If your Access database is protected, fill-in your password as well.

In case you use Access workgroups and security, you will need to also find your system database and specify credentials for it.

2.

Connection to Firebird

We will choose Firebird from the list of available database formats.

In the server field we need to type the name or IP address of the Firebird server. If you have Firebird installed on the local machine, where Full Convert is running, you can leave the server field blank. Username and password we don't need to touch in most cases as Full Convert pre-fills the "magic" values which opens all Firebird databases.

If Firebird is on this machine, we can now simply click ellipsis (...) button to select FDB database file. If the file is on remote machine, you need to type the path to the file as remote server sees it. So, if the file is in C:\t\ folder on your server, you need to write the full path, for example: C:\t\filename.FDB.
