Fabric Lakehouse Architecture

OneLake Unified Storage

OneLake is the foundational storage layer of Microsoft Fabric. Built on Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS Gen2), it provides a centralized location for storing and managing organizational data.

OneLake enables both professional developers and citizen developers to access and work with shared datasets without needing to understand complex infrastructure concepts. This unified storage model helps eliminate fragmented data silos across teams and systems.

The system enforces consistent governance, security policies, and data access rules across the organization, ensuring reliable and controlled data sharing.

OneLake follows a hierarchical organizational structure. Within a tenant, users can create workspaces that function similarly to folders. Inside these workspaces, lakehouses can be created to organize files, folders, and structured tables that represent databases built on top of the data lake.

Integrated Data Experiences

All compute experiences within Microsoft Fabric, including Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Data Factory, Power BI, and Real-Time Analytics, are tightly integrated with OneLake.

This integration allows users to access and process the same datasets across different tools without duplicating data or creating multiple copies in separate storage systems.

Microsoft Fabric also supports mounting existing Platform as a Service (PaaS) storage accounts directly into OneLake. This capability enables organizations to share and analyze existing datasets instantly without requiring data migration or duplication.

Export Fabric Lakehouse Database

It may make sense to migrate your data away from Fabric Lakehouse. You may want to do it permanently or just need to share your tables with a collague in a different format.

We will copy all your tables with their data and apply indexing and relationships exactly as they are in your current Fabric Lakehouse database. In a nutshell, you get exactly the same database in another database engine. Each time you run the migration, we will copy all the tables again. Of course, we have a built-in scheduler, so you can run this overnight and have a fresh database copy in the morning.
